Celebrating someone else’s joy and victories is one of the most valuable acts of love, yet it can also be the one thing we easily neglect. Most of the time, we feel moved to take action only when we see an area of great need and hurt. We prefer that our time and resources be channeled efficiently into fixing someone’s dire situation and, for the most part, it should be the case. Love does its most important work when it is used to heal.
However, there is something in us that does not only want to be seen when we hurt. There is something in us that longs to be noticed and even celebrated when things are working, when things are okay. It is one of the best ways we can value one another. It is in this area that love is showing us that it has no limits and that it has the ability to be lavish and extravagant.
We need to learn the skill of taking a break from what consumes us in our own lives and get into the habit of asking people: “What’s making you smile these days”?
Your God is present among you,
a strong Warrior there to save you.
Happy to have you back, he’ll calm you with his love
and delight you with his songs.
