Are You Listening? Pass Me Not by John Sung

I first heard Pass Me Not for the first time in 1992 through the soundtrack of the movie Leap of Faith. Since then, it has been a staple for me in my journey of faith. a go-to song and prayer during times of desperation.

It is written by Fanny J. Crosby, an American missionary, who despite being blind shortly after birth wrote some 8,000 songs; including the famous hymn Blessed Assurance.

The song initially was controversial for not being theologically correct. The line “while on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by” seemed like it almost accused God of favoritism.

For me, it’s no different from a song you would find straight out of the Psalms or Lamentations. No holds barred bold at times, weepy, needy and plead-full at others. The writers believed that they were so close to God, they could call him out when it felt like God seemed to not be living up to his end of the deal. So secure is God he includes songs like these in his word. I guess, he knew there would be days it would feel like we needed them.

And for me, there have been some those days, times when it felt like God was with everyone else , every where else but with you.  I would lay down at my office floor and cry this song to God. And soon, by the third chorus, I would feel him reminding me that he had never left that he would never passed me by.

On a day where you don’t have the words to pray, this honest hymn might be a good friend.

A South Korean singer-songwriter, John Sung spent the better part of his childhood in the Philippines as a child of missionary parents.

As an infant, John suffered from several life-threatening illnesses. Doctors from Seoul National University Hospital had diagnosed that he would not be able to sing let alone breathe without medical assistance. Miraculously, he was cured and developed a raspy tone.

John was brought up singing hymns and gospel music in church. Like most burgeoning singer-songwriters, John’s affinity for music caught on at an early age. But it wasn’t until later in High School when he was exposed to music by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, and other greats that led him to dabble in songwriting.

In March of 2011, he pick up the guitar and began to write songs. His self-titled EP was released shortly after.

Pass Me Not

Performed and arranged by John Sung

Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Savior, Savior,
Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Let me at Thy throne of mercy
Find a sweet relief,
Kneeling there in deep contrition;
Help my unbelief.

Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.
